height: 6’2”
weight: 178 lbs.
build: Lean, muscular, similar to a swimmer but with a bit more muscle mass.
hair: Thick brown hair, which remains unkempt; bangs don’t quite reach his eyes

physical description:Shin Hiruma Youichi is not a terribly imposing man to most people—though he is on the larger side for an Air Nomad. In particular, he has a lot of muscle mass, given that Airbenders are typically very light and lithe. This does not present itself as a hindrance to the aggressive Airbender, however—though it does necessitate a slightly larger glider. His clothing, like most of his tribe, consists of the standard vestments of the monks. However, Shin has modified his clothes somewhat. In particular, his pants are much baggier than a typical airbender’s, allowing him to control his trajectory in freefall. He also doesn’t shave his head, like many of the nomads. Notably, he doesn’t have air tattoos on his right arm or head.

overall personality: Shin is what you might call a “militant pacifist.” He genuinely believes that violence should be the last resort, like most Air Nomads; however, unlike his kin, he believes that if someone really wants a fight, that they deserve it. Growing up learning the ways from the monks, Shin took a unique perspective on the teachings—not simply learning them, he applied and studied them alongside the fall of the Nomads to the Fire Nation. As such, he is a strong proponent that teachings must evolve and change—after all, the old teachings obviously weren’t perfect if they led to the downfall of the temples. Shin is very staunch in his opinions, and this, combined with his aloof nature and sarcastic attitude, make him difficult to approach and befriend. Despite this, he is actually a nice guy, and can get very protective of his friends if he feels it’s needed. He is also a surprisingly good teacher, sharp but patient. Shin is not terribly violent, but he is very vicious in fights, and many people feel that “brutal” is the most accurate term for the fiery Airbender.
Shin never gives anyone his full name. Like most nomads, he was taken from his parents and raised elsewhere. But Shin doesn’t believe in the detachment that Air Nomads seek, believing the enlightenment gained is not worth the spiritual connection to the world that is lost in the process. Since his parents didn’t raise him themselves, why does he owe allegiance to their last name?
Like metalbending, bloodbending, and lightningbending, airbending has an “advanced” form. Because of Shin’s more aggressive attitude and high level of willingness to use his powers to fight if needed, he has unlocked the top level of airbending—to date, he is the only Airbender capable of vacuumbending, utilizing moves that create a lack of air in an area.
bending: Yes
special techniques:
Air Sheath: A technique invented by Shin, that can be taught to any Airbender. It utilizes a layer of the user’s energy, wrapping it around their entire body. This field automatically parts air around the Airbender, completely removing all wind resistance and enhancing their movement. Thus, the technique gives the Airbender a massive burst of speed and jumping height, and making them “floatier” in the air. The downside to this technique is that since no air can reach the body, the move can only be used as long as the user can hold their breath—and not even an Airbender can hold it forever.
Vacuum Blast: By focusing on a point in the air, Shin is capable of blasting away all the air at that point. The effect generates force similar to an explosion, though of course without the fire and shrapnel. The longer he concentrates, the larger the area will be affected.
Vacuum Drive: The other side of his Vacuum Blast, Shin can maintain a vacuum for a short time after creating it. Once he releases his hold, air will come rushing in to fill the vacuum, and anyone nearby can get yanked in as well. There’s no damage involved, but it’s almost impossible to resist the pull without some way to anchor yourself, and since a vacuum is invisible, you have no way of knowing it’s even there if Shin created it without blasting anything.
Vacuum Slash: The deadliest weapon in Shin’s arsenal, the Vacuum Slash is a moving, blade-shaped vacuum of air. It is a powerful weapon, capable of damaging almost any substance. The slash is invisible and quite fast. It can cleave through human flesh and wood and continue flying. Cuts created by the slash are very deep, but bleed very little, and they sever muscles, tendons, nerves, and blood vessels very cleanly, making recovery nearly impossible. As eager to fight as he is, Shin will try to avoid using this move unless the situation is truly dire. While the move can be thrown, Shin can use an even stronger version just with his hands, though this obviously brings problems with range. The ranged version can cut flesh and wood, but not stone. The melee version is strong enough to cut through a few inches of stone, as well as bones. Neither can cut through steel and other similar substances. The move is also easily read by skilled fighters, as it requires a powerful chopping motion with the hand to execute. The vacuum slash, perhaps fittingly given the history between air and fire, deprives fire of its fuel and lightning of its pathway, allowing Shin to cut through Firebending moves. Because of the clean slashing motion, it can’t be used to ward off flying earth attacks, however, and doesn’t affect waterbending techniques at all.
weapons:Shin of course has a glider-staff, like most airbenders, but his staff has a larger wingspan to accommodate for his bulkier physique. The staff wings are actually shaped like bird wings, and are colored black, leading to his nickname of “Blackwing.”

history:
Shin was, like many Air Nomads, born during their period of exile, when they were still hiding from the Fire Nation. He was always a bit more violent than his fellows—not a bully, but he was the cause of a lot of strife when he was younger. This was because Shin had problems accepting the teachings when history had taught him that reality didn’t quite work the same way. This in itself wasn’t the problem—the problem was that if Shin couldn’t understand it, and his teachers couldn’t explain it to him, then he refused to accept it. And his opinion was difficult to sway once it solidified. Despite his natural prowess with airbending, this inability to accept the teachings without good reason, coupled with his natural predisposition against giving people respect just because they were older (they had to earn it, the same as anyone) prevented Shin from earning all of his tattoos. Despite this, there is no question that his prowess with airbending is quite high.
It was when he was 15 that Shin first learned to Vacuumbend. He was practicing his fighting and airbending after yet another argument with a teacher, and in his anger, he lashed out harder than he should have. The resulting air slash was actually a vacuum slash, and it carved a dozen branches off the tree he’d been blasting leaves off. When he showed this move to the elders, they were horrified and demanded that he never use it again. When Shin decided that their reasons for demanding this weren’t adequate, he refused. From that point on, Shin was banned from all the Air Nomad classes, and to this day, many of them still call him Fallen. But they couldn’t stop him from practicing himself, not without betraying their own teachings, since Shin wasn’t hurting anyone. So the youth continued to refine his abilities, and with his newfound free time, began to train his body as well. As a result, he is larger and more muscular than almost any other Airbender. As well, he’s much more human than the average Air Nomad, choosing to embrace his flaws and his strengths, rather than neglect his strengths in favor or erasing his flaws. Shin values the connection to people that the Air Nomads teach needs to be removed, and believes that their “enlightenment” is just a different form of darkness. But, because he is more human, more emotional and willing to fight than most Nomads, he tends to come across as kind of a jerk, because people subconsciously compare him to the idea of what an Air Nomad should act like.
Now, Shin travels the world, training and refining himself, ever seeking out new knowledge, new truths, and new techniques, in the hopes of one day changing the teachings he believes are so flawed—or at least giving future Airbenders a choice of what to learn…
